Open House | Step Inside an Architectural Gem

The notion of the classic American ranch has been exaggerated in pop culture— so much so that rarely do we find such a brilliant example of its modern interpretation. Here, in sun-drenched California, Rancho Santa Fe is not characterized by roaming cattle, rustic touches, and that trademark triangle dinner bell hanging on the front porch. Instead, it stands as an unconventional oasis—the ultimate dream home for architecture and design aficionados the world over.

Renowned architect Guy Dreier has conceived a structure as functional and impressive as it is striking. From the moment you arrive at the private gated drive, there’s a sense of the significance that composition played in developing the estate over seven years. Meticulous landscaping is backed by mountain and valley vistas in the distance.

At the residence, two-story walls of glass reflect the myriad pools and water features surrounding the home, while inviting warm California sun onto contemporary sculptures.

Through towering glass doors, a flowing and original open concept with soaring ceilings extends its greeting. Sail-like overhangs conjure images of the Guggenheim Bilbao, while elegant natural colors and materials provide a grounding presence. High-tech smart design allows the home’s glass walls to tuck away for the ultimate indoor-outdoor living. In addition to its open-air mastery, the ranch boasts stylish original furnishings and mixing blocked sturdiness with organic shapes, all designed by Dreier to complement the space.

The main living and dining areas play peek-a-boo through a fireplace with artistic and sculptural integrity. Strong stone floats between two stunning blocked columns above ambient, low-lying flames, standing as a living sculpture and focal point in this sweeping room. This magnetic design is not the only stunning fireplace in the home; the master suite also features a central stone mantel flanked by sleeping and lounging areas.

Elsewhere, glass and water envelop the guest bedrooms, offering a sparkling reminder of the pools outside. Loft areas offer privacy and escape, glass-encased walkways link comfort and repose, and significant blockade stairways offer their own impressive interior views. A massive chef’s kitchen dares you to open your home to incomparable celebrations—leaving the detached two-bedroom guest house for your most discerning guests.

Taking advantage of the Sunshine State’s progressive views and making the most of its ample natural resources, solar panels supply power, while a refreshing citrus grove and well-tended farmer’s garden ensure the busy kitchen will never be shy of fresh supply.

The wider grounds are punctuated with both exotic and local flora, handpicked by landscape architect Theresa Clark. And outdoor living is non-negotiable thanks to the stunning sports court, tennis court, private pavilion, and infinity pool. A separate high-tech, zero-edge lap pool with its adjustable water level provides for wave-making swims, minus the splashing.

Every square foot of the property is a nod to a love of art and museum styling as well as an appreciation of design principles, and a desire to dream bigger than most could comprehend. This ranch, then, is the pinnacle of a well-designed life.

What the Next Generation of Affluent Consumers Wants from Luxury Brands

We’re witnessing the largest intergenerational transfer of wealth in history. The luxury market is being reshaped by the emergence of new luxury consumers, ones who are acutely aware of being sold to, skeptical of traditional marketing tactics, and dismissive of volume as an indicator of wealth. Millennials and their buying habits are more acute than any generation before them—bringing new challenges to the luxury space.

I spoke about this recently with Forbes, but throughout my career, as I’ve moved from education to fashion, and now to luxury real estate, I’ve seen how successful brand connection comes from strong storytelling. This audience spends an average of five hours online each day, so they’re already bombarded with brand messaging. We want their loyalty and business, but first we need their attention. This is how we’re earning it.

Heritage and Evolution

For a generation that values authenticity, the stories behind the products have never been more important. Brands must prove investment in quality and craftsmanship. The Sotheby’s brand has a 270-year history—and we extend this directly to our clients.

Because of the Sotheby’s auction heritage, both established and emerging affluent consumers view association with the brand—working with a Sotheby’s International Realty agent, for example—as a benchmark of success. It’s certainly a differentiator that Sotheby’s once sold the library of Napoleon, but it comes down to how we frame that for a Millennial audience.

Brands like Burberry understand this well, balancing a storied history with contemporary brand posture. Burberry’s shift to social media platforms with inspiring, current brand ambassadors works to enhance, not detract from, the company’s prestigious 162-year legacy.

Digital Agility

Consumers want to know luxury brands are shifting to meet their individual needs, and see brands that don’t evolve as static or dated. Our core message really comes alive through new innovation, and in that respect, we’re more of a brand marketing organization. A cloud-based ad building tool allows our affiliates to access our unique design mold when creating advertising collateral. That means over 21,000 agents are able to seamlessly communicate our brand to global audiences while adding essential local lifestyle elements to really draw them in.

Millennials and their buying habits are more acute than any generation before them—bringing new challenges to the luxury space.

Digital media is perhaps the most significant way we can make meaningful connections with these consumers today: VR, 3D home tours, and high-definition photography all service their need for inspiration and transparency. Our video-centric digital approach follows Millennials’ natural discovery behavior. We’ll be pushing the envelope again at the end of February as we unveil augmented reality that’s the first of its kind in the real estate industry.

Our LIVE campaign approached property investment as a key component of the lifestyles of fascinating people. It speaks to the fact that a Sotheby’s International Realty home is a catalyst for the lives our audience seek. Our approach is not dissimilar from the Apple iPad campaign — one that has always stuck with me — with the tagline “this is what matters.”

It’s simple but powerful, appealing by focusing on the opportunities the product creates.

Detail-Driven Service

Emerging affluent consumers are spending more on experiences than personal goods—a trend that is only continuing to grow. Because of this, they reject brand braggadocio and baiting tactics, looking instead for a genuine connection with the brands they support. They’re also looking for bespoke service. Forming a relationship with Sotheby’s International Realty means entering a curated marketplace, with the finest properties handpicked by our sales associates. Our home collections prove we value our clients’ time by giving them refined options from the outset. This focus on localization and personalization is essential for an audience who’s come to expect it.

There is immeasurable value in forming connections with this audience, not only in a manner of wealth, but also in reinforcing the perception of the brand. In marrying our history of excellence with innovation and meaningful storytelling, we’ve created an entirely new roster of clients. Ones we hope to be with every step of the journey: from their first property to their retirement haven.

Sotheby’s | Inside the Wine Collections of Great Connoisseurs

Drawing from some of the best cellars known to Sotheby’s, the collections featured in Finest & Rarest Wines (24 February, New York) include wines from the most sought-after domains in Burgundy, the top chateaux in Bordeaux and beyond. Selections such as La Tâche DRC 1995, Heitz Cellar Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 1991 and Petrus 1993 highlight the unparalleled study and passion of true wine connoisseurs. Read on to learn more about the remarkable private collections, along with their greatest treasures, in the upcoming sale.

Legends from the Cellar of a Long-Time Oenophile

This fabulous selection from a West Coast Collector and aficionado, whose passion for wine was born during a trip to France many years ago, begins with over thirty bottles and fifteen lots from iconic DRC. Highlights include two bottles of 1985 Grands Echezeaux, four vintages of Richebourg and two bottles of the mythical 1985 Romanée Conti. In addition, rarely does one ever see an astonishing eight vintages of La Tâche, including multiple bottles from the legendary 1985, 1990, 1993 and 1996 vintages. An impressive selection of Bordeaux follows with all of the First Growths present including full cases of 1990 Lafite and Margaux, 2000 Haut Brion, Mouton Rothschild and Latour amongst many others. Finally, not to be overshadowed are individual bottles of the immortal 1929 Y’quem.

Almost all of these wines were bought on release and stored meticulously by the original owner in a private, purpose-built temperature controlled cellar. The wines, part of a much larger collection, were inspected on site and shipped to Sotheby’s warehouse via temperature-controlled truck.

Pristine Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne from a Manhattan Collector

From the moment this gentleman, a long-time Sotheby’s client in New York City, began amassing a cellar, provenance and pristine conditions have been the hallmark of the collection. The vast majority of this collection was purchased on release, with the balance sourced from the most reputable of retailers and auction houses. These impeccably sourced wines were removed from temperature-controlled professional storage and purpose-built home cellars for transfer to Sotheby’s warehouse.

We begin in Bordeaux, with a focus on the outstanding 2000 and 2005 vintages. Cos d’Estournel, Grand Puy Lacoste, Léoville Las Cases and Lynch Bages all appear in original wood, alongside a full case of Mouton Rothschild 1998. Mugnier 1999 and Bonnes Mares G. Roumier 2005. An incredibly rare full dozen bottles of Musigny Joseph Drouhin 1996 in original carton, plus Krug Clos d’Ambonnay 1996 and Pol Roger Cuvée Winston Churchill 1988 in jeroboam, rounds out this spectacular offering of blue chip rarities.
